Germany Suspends Travel from UK over COVID-19 Variant Concern

German authorities on Sunday announced that it will ban most non-essential travel from the United Kingdom to contain the spread of more contagious variants of the COVID-19 virus. The ban came into effect on May 23. Meanwhile, the cases of coronavirus are increasing rapidly in the UK again. There has been a 12% increase in cases in the last seven days.

At the same time, the 'triple mutation' variant identified in Yorkshire has raised concerns for the country. Giving information about this, British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that the triple mutant variant was first identified in Yorkshire named as VUI-21 MAI-01. So far, 49 cases of new strains have been confirmed in Yorkshire.

Over 44 lakh cases reported in the UK so far:

On the other hand, France on Sunday also indicated banning British travelers. According to the report, Britain reported 2,694 new cases of coronavirus on Saturday. While 17,410 new cases were reported between 16 and 22 May. So far, 44.60 lakh cases of coronavirus reported in Britain. Of these, 43 lakh have been recovered.  On the other hand, Britain has vaccinated 33% of its population, while only 5% of people across Europe have been vaccinated.

Citizens returning to Germany will have to remain in quarantine:

Germany banned all British travelers except their citizens. Airlines, rail and bus companies will only be able to bring back German citizens. Returning German citizens will have to remain quarantined for two weeks. At the same time, bars, pubs and restaurants in Germany closed due to the new variant of Britain.
