Coronavirus Worldwide: Confirmed Cases Surpasses 175 Million-Mark

Coronavirus pandemic continues wreaking havoc worldwide. According to worldometer.com, 175,216,068 cases of coronavirus have been reported so far. Of these, 158,740,771 people have been cured, while 3,778,163 people have died.

India to receive 8 crores vaccines from US through COVAX: Official

India will receive a share of the 80 million (8 crores) unused COVID-19 vaccines through the UN-backed COVAX global vaccine sharing programme that President Joe Biden has announced, a senior State Department official said on Thursday. On June 2, Biden announced that the US would allocate 75 percent of the coronavirus vaccines from its stockpile— nearly 1.9 crores of the first tranche of 2.5 crore doses—through the United Nations-backed Covax global vaccine sharing program to countries in South and Southeast Asia as well as Africa.

More than 94,000 cases reported in India:

India has been witnessing a gradual decrease in daily coronavirus cases. According to the latest data from the Union Health Ministry, India reported 94,052 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours taking the cumulative count of the cases to 2,91,83,121. With 6148 deaths (highest in one day) in the last 24 hours, the death toll has increased to 3,59,676.

The country also witnessed 1,51,367 recoveries in the last 24 hours taking the cumulative recoveries to 2,76,55,493. With this, the country's recovery rate has increased to 94.77%. On the other hand, India's mortality rate stands at 1.23%.

High vaccination coverage can help reduce risk of variants: WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called on leaders of the developed Group of Seven (G-7) countries to help the UN-backed vaccination program against COVID-19 to boost access to doses in the developing world. Ahead of G7 leaders meeting, Tedros said they could help meet organization's target that at least 10% of the populations in every country are vaccinated by the end of September — and 30% by the end of the year.
