Electricity consumption in the country declined by 14.16 percent to 103 billion units in May due to reduced demand due to corona virus epidemic and ongoing lockdown for its prevention. It was 120 billion units in the same month a year ago, however, electricity consumption in May has increased compared to April, in April, it declined by 22.65 percent.

Due to the Corona virus epidemic and the nationwide shutdown, electricity demand was low throughout April. The May data shows that the government's approval of economic activities and the temperature reaching above 45 degrees have improved power consumption.

According to the figures of the Ministry of Power, the total electricity consumption last month was 103.02 billion units, compared to 120.02 billion units in the same month a year ago. According to the data, electricity consumption in April was down by 22.65 percent to 85.16 billion units from 110.11 billion units in the same month of 2019. The government announced a nationwide shutdown from March 25 to prevent the spread of the corona virus epidemic, this led to lower commercial and industrial demand in April. With the commercial and industrial demand coming down, demand remained low in April this year due to some cold weather and the temperature remained below 40 degree Celsius in the second fortnight of the month. However, during May 4 to May 31, many economic activities took place. This accelerated industrial and commercial demand, apart from this, the demand for electricity also increased due to temperature rising. Experts believe that as concessions increase from June 1, power demand will increase in the coming days.
