Jagdish Choudhary, who was a Domraja of Varanasi, has been posthumously honored with the Padmashri Award 2021. The government has also given him this award for marvelous work in the field of social service. Jagdish Chaudhary was the defender of PM Modi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Jagdish Chaudhary was made dom raja three years ago after the death of Ranjit Chowdhary. Ranjit was the dom raja of Kashi. However, he died during treatment in a private hospital on 25 August 2020 due to illness. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences on his death by tweeting.

The history of the Domraja family in Varanasi is centuries old. For years, their own family members give fire for the last rites at Manikarnika and Harishchandra's crematoriums in Kashi. According to mythological beliefs, King Harishchandra sold himself to Kalu Dom. The king used to lit the fire in the crematorium. Since then, the head of the Dom fraternity is called Dom Raja here. However, in Kashi, about five thousand people are associated with his community.
