The Election Commission has said that instead of February 14, 2022, elections will be held in Punjab on February 20, 2022. Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had first requested the Election Commission to change the date of elections in Punjab. After this, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also demanded a change in the date of polling in Punjab. After this, the Election Commission has issued this order.

Guru Ravidass Jayanti on February 14

In Punjab, the ruling party Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party had appealed to the Election Commission to change the date of the election in view of Guru Ravidass Jayanti. Actually, on 14th February is the birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas. A large number of people go to Varanasi from Punjab on this day. In such a situation, those who go there will be deprived of voting. Therefore, both the Congress and BJP parties urged the Election Commission (ECI) to change the date of elections in Punjab.

Considering the demand of both the national parties, the Election Commission on Monday announced to postpone the election for 6 days. Now for the 117 assembly seats of Punjab, instead of 14, voting will be held simultaneously on 20 February.
