The name of Labh Singh, owner of a mobile repair shop of a village in Ugoke village of Barnala district, has suddenly come into the limelight. When news broke about the most high-profile seats in Punjab elections, the results were shocking. Everyone was surprised as soon as the Aam Aadmi Party candidate defeated CM Charanjit Singh Channi from the Bhadaur assembly constituency. Apart from Chamkaur Sahib, Bhadaur was the second seat from where Channi had contested.

AAP also won the 2017 election in Bhadaur

The AAP also won the 2017 election in Bhadaur, a reserved constituency. Also in the Malwa belt, there was a great performance in the adjoining constituencies of Dirba, Barnala and Mahal Kalan. AAP's Bhadaur candidate Pirmal Singh Dhaula registered a landslide victory by securing 44.14 percent votes defeating Akali Dal's runner-up by over 20,000 votes. Such a victory was no wonder as AAP had also won the Lok Sabha election from Sangrur, under which Bhadaur comes.

Labh Singh worked hard on the ground day and night to defeat Charanjit Singh Channi. 35-year-old Singh learned to repair mobiles and open a mobile repairing shop. After joining AAP full time, he held positions ranging from ward in-charge to block and circle president. In the affidavit filed along with his nomination, he listed the Hero Honda 2014 motorcycle as his asset.

Labh joins AAP in 2013

The AAP had also considered the name of Labh Singh, who had a stronghold in the region, for a ticket in the 2017 assembly elections. Expressing happiness over his victory, Labh Singh had said 'My reasoning is simple. Had the CM done any development work in his own area, Chamkaur Sahib, he would not have had to shift to another seat. Son of a driver, Labh Singh spoke about his humble background and said, 'Totally devoted to AAP. I have been associated with the party since 2013 when the party came to Punjab.

Senior AAP MLA and Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema, who contested from neighbouring Dirba, had said: "This youth, Labh Singh, who lives in a two-room house with his family, will defeat the CM."
