Kazakh Defence Minister Resign Resigns 15 Die in Arm Depot Explosion

Kazakh Defense Minister Nurlan Yermekbayev has resigned from his post, days after a fire and a series of blasts at an arms depot killed 15 soldiers and firefighters. This information given by the President's Office. As the cause of the explosion was unclear, the authorities had evacuated settlements from Kazakhstan's southern Zhamby province on 26 August. Let us inform that in the year 2019, 4 people died in one such incident.

Earlier, Nurlan Yermakbayev said that the cause of the fire at the military base in the southern province of Zhambyl was not yet known. Engineering explosives kept in this base. There were 10 explosions due to the fire. Soldiers and firefighters died while dousing the fire. Yermekbayev ordered the authorities to expedite the construction of two new depots. It would be better equipped and located away from any residential area. A Defense Ministry spokesman had said that the minister was ready to resign after the blast incident.

Kazakh Defense Ministry issued a statement in this regard:

In a statement, the Kazakh Defense Ministry said, "At approximately 19:00 [13:00 GMT], a fire broke out near a warehouse of a military unit stationed in the Jambyl region's Bayzak district. As a result of the fire, unidentified objects exploded."

The explosion provoked a public outcry, especially because the fire at the base raised questions relocating the base from a facility in the town of Arys after a similar incident there happened in 2019 which killed four people.
