On Friday, JoAnne S. Bass was selected to become the Chief Master Sergeant of the powerful US Air Force. For the first time in the history of the US Air Force, a woman has been given a major responsibility. Not only this, she will be the first African-American to lead US military service. S Bass will be the senior enlisted advisor for Brown and Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett on personnel welfare matters. Bass, who hails from the United States of America is serving as Command Chief Master Sergeant at Keisler Air Force Base in Mississippi. She joined the Air Force in the year 1993.
About two weeks before this, the Senate gave General Charles Q. Brown's appointment to the post of Chief of Air Force was confirmed. Brown became the first black officer to lead any US military service. He will take over in August. Relatively few women are promoted to senior positions in the US Army. So far no woman has been given the opportunity to serve as the Chief of any military service.
Both appointments have occurred at a time when demonstrations have been taking place in several cities in the US to support blacks following the death of black George Floyd in police custody. After Floyd's death, there is a growing demand for equal rights for blacks in America. General Brown had released a video on Twitter when his name was decided for the Chief of the Air Force. In it, he said that I am emotional and thinking of many African Americans who faced a situation like George Floyd. I am thinking about my history and my experiences related to racist issues. I see some hope when I was nominated as the Chief of the Air Force. However, it will also be a major burden. I will try to end racial discrimination with my professional attitude.
