Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla to Chair UNSC Meeting Today

India's Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla will chair the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting in New York today. India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti reached Shringla in New York on Sunday. India elected as the President of the UNSC for the month of August. This is India's first presidency in the UNSC as a non-permanent member. Meanwhile, the two-year tenure of India as a non-permanent member of the UNSC began on January 1, 2021.

In its recent statement on the Afghanistan issue, the UNSC has removed the name of Taliban from terrorist activities. Earlier, a day after Taliban took over Kabul, a statement issued by the UNSC on Afghanistan, in which it appealed to the Taliban not to support terrorism in their region.

On the other hand, French President Emmanuel Macron said that France and Britain will propose to declare Kabul as a 'Safe Zone' at an emergency meeting of the United Nations on Monday. "The purpose of our proposal is to define a safe zone in Kabul. Humanitarian aid works will take place in these areas," Macron said in an interview published in the French newspaper 'Le General du Dimanche'.

Macron later confirmed his statement in Mosul, Iraq, saying he expected the proposal to be welcomed. Meanwhile, , he said, "I don't think anyone would oppose the protection of humanitarian aid operations." UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called a meeting at the United Nations on the issue of Afghanistan in which important member countries Britain, France, America, China and Russia will participate. All these members have veto power.
