The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended measures to curb spam and scam calls. With this initiative, the names of unknown numbers appearing on users' phones will also be displayed.
Nowadays, many promotional calls are received on phones, which can sometimes pose difficulties for users. To address this issue, TRAI has proposed introducing caller ID display services.
TRAI has recommended the introduction of Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) supplementary service to be offered by telecom networks. This service will display the caller's name on the user's phone.
However, further details about how this feature will function are expected to be revealed soon.
TRAI has recommended that the government issue directives to introduce CNAP features. This would entail making CNAP available on all devices in India.
Currently, these recommendations by TRAI have not been accepted. Once the recommendations are implemented, the government is expected to provide a grace period of about six months to implement CNAP features.
Trai has stated in its recommendation that telecom subscribers will provide Identity Information. This should be the name given in the Customer Application Form (CAF).
Whenever a call is made, users will see the caller's name displayed on the screen.
Currently, there are several third-party apps available to provide details of unknown calls, including Truecaller, Bharat Caller ID & Anti-Spam.
Many handset manufacturers have pre-installed this feature, which provides information about spam calls. This service gathers information through crowdsourced data.
