Sugar exports from Maharashtra affected due to lockdown

The impact of the lockdown has been on sugar exports from Maharashtra. During the period from January to June this year, only 36 lakh tonnes were exported from the state against the target of 6 million tonnes.

Jayaprakash Dandegaonkar, chairman of the Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factory Federation, said the export process was affected due to the Covid-19 epidemic and the subsequent lockdown. He said that from November 2019 to June 2020, 570 lakh tonnes of sugarcane were crushed in the state.

So far 63 lakh tonnes has been produced. Dandegaonkar said, "36 lakh tonnes of sugar has been exported. There have been deals for the export of six lakh tonnes and sugar is being released from the godowns for this. "He said that till now most of the sugar has been exported to Indonesia and Iran.

A year ago, 952 lakh tonnes of sugarcane were crushed and 107 lakh tonnes were produced in the state during the period from January to June. Sugarcane crushing usually starts in November every year and ends in March.
