TATA IPL 2024: The Indian Premier League is the kind of tournament which is most awaited by not just cricket-loving fans but the people who don’t follow this game and also watch the whole season of the IPL.
That is because this cash-rich league tournament brings a lot of high entertainment value, which doesn’t allow the viewers to move even an inch from their TV sets.
We all know that the IPL was invented after India won the first-ever and only T20 World Cup title in 2007 in South Africa. Since 2008, the Indian Premier League has been the best in the world because the players feel that this T20 event has the highest competition value and it is the best from all the other leagues in the world, which were started after the IPL 2008 edition.
Yesterday, 22nd February 2024, the BCCI had announced the schedule of the first 17 days of the TATA IPL 2024 season. Chennai Super who won the last season of the IPL 2023 season, will start this year’s tournament and they will take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first encounter of this season at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Today in this segment, we will mention the teams who have played the opening match of an IPL season and also went on to win the tile in that same year –
The Yellow Army became the first team to defend their IPL crown in the season of 2011. CSK won their first-ever title in 2010 and in 2011, they started their campaign against the Purple army of Kolkata Knight Riders. Super Kings won that game by just 2 runs as KKR scored 151 runs for the loss of seven wickets in a run chase of 154 runs.
The purple army of Kolkata Knight Riders won their second and last trophy of the Indian Premier League in the edition of 2014. The KKR franchise side started their title-winning campaign against the defending champions of the last season, 2013, Mumbai Indians.
The Knights Riders scored 163 runs. However, Mumbai could not chase that score down and they lost that match by 43 runs.
The repeat match-up of the opening encounter of KKR Vs MI in the 2015 IPL season as well, like it was in the 2014 edition. Mumbai Indians won their second IPL title in the year of 2015 despite they started their tournament with a loss.
The title winners of the 2015 season scored 168 runs for the loss of three wickets. But KKR chased that score down in 18.3 overs and won that encounter by 7 wickets.
Chennai Super Kings made a strong comeback in the 2018 season after they were banned from the 2016 and 2017 editions. CSK won their 3rd title of this cash league tournament in 2018 and they had a tense start to their journey against their old folks Mumbai Indians.
The Yellow Army won that opening game by just one wicket with just one delivery to spare. This win might have set the tone for them in that edition.
Mumbai Indians won their 5th and last title in the 2020 season of the Indian Premier League when the whole season was played in United Arab Emirates.
The old rivals MI and CSK met again and that was for the fourth time when these two teams played the opening match of an IPL season. MI again clinched another IPL title despite losing the opening match of that season.
They are only the second side to defend their crown. MI won in 2019 and that final was also played against CSK, which Mumbai won by one run.
The first and last match of the IPL 2023 season was played between CSK and GT. This list also started with a mention of CSK and it also ends with the same.
Chennai Super Kings won their 5th title last year and now they have the same number of trophies with Mumbai Indians. Gujarat Titans might have won the first encounter of 2023 by 5 wickets.
But CSK won the Finals, which mattered the most. The final of the last year’s season was pushed to reserve day due to the rains in Ahmedabad. ]
The Yellow Army also had a revised target to be chased in 15 overs. However, CSK achieved that score and they also won that game by 5 wickets due to DLS method.
