TATA IPL 2024: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season is scheduled to begin on March 22. However, just a day before that, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise made a big announcement.
This time Ruturaj Gaikwad will be seen captaining the team in place of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Notably, 27 year old star opener Ruturaj Gaikwad will be the fourth captain of the Chennai team. Before him, apart from Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina have captained the team.
Dhoni has captained the Chennai team in 212 matches, while Jadeja and Raina have captained the team in 8 and 5 matches respectively.
Even in IPL 2022, the Chennai team had announced a new captain just a day before. Ravindra Jadeja was appointed as their captain at that time, but this move backfired.
The team's performance under Jadeja's captaincy was poor, and even Jadeja's performance was subpar.
Consequently, Dhoni had to once again take up the responsibility of captaincy midway through the season.
At the age of 42, Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. However, he continues to play in the IPL. As captain, he has led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to victory 5 times.
Under his leadership, Chennai also won the last season, i.e. the 2023 season, defeating Gujarat Titans in the final.
Dhoni had recently shared a post on Facebook indicating that he may be seen in a new role in IPL 2024. Dhoni wrote in a Facebook post, 'Can't wait for the new season and new 'role'.' stay tuned!'
In this post Mahi did not reveal what her new role would be. However, now everything has become clear from that post.
