The Sri Lankan team has suffered a major setback ahead of the series of 3 ODIs and T20 matches against India. Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews is likely to announce his retirement from international cricket before the series. According to media reports, Mathews has informed the Sri Lankan Cricket Board about this. Notably, Mathews is amongst many senior players who had objected to the new central contract points system over transparency issues.

According to reports, 34-year-old Mathews is in talks with the board regarding his retirement. Earlier, he had declared himself absent for the recent England tour. He took paternity leave to take care of his wife. Sri Lankan team missed Mathews a lot during the England tour. The English team defeated Sri Lanka in the T20 and ODI series.

Sri Lanka's fourth most successful captain:

Matthews was appointed as captain of the team in 2012. Under Mathews' captaincy, Sri Lanka played 156 matches including ODIs, T20s and Tests. Out of this, the team won 68 matches. At the same time, the team had to face defeat in 75 matches. 1 match was tied and 6 matches were drawn.

Mathews' career record in all three formats:

Matthews has played 90 Tests, 218 ODIs and 78 T20 matches in his international career. He scored 6236 runs in Tests at an average of 44.86, 5835 runs in ODIs at an average of 41.68 and 1148 runs in T20s at an average of 25.51. Mathews has also played 49 IPL matches. In this, he scored 724 runs at an average of 23.35. In bowling, Mathews has 33 wickets in Tests, 120 wickets in ODIs and 38 wickets in T20Is. He has 27 wickets in IPL.
