Self-Formed Shivling in Amarnath Cave

The cave of Baba Amarnath is situated at an altitude of approximately 3,800 meters above sea level. The distinctive feature of the Shivling (a representation of Lord Shiva) found in the cave is its self-formed nature.

Every year during the cold season, the lingam takes shape, attracting millions of devotees from both within the country and abroad, who undertake the Amarnath Yatra for its darshan (sight).

Before the pilgrimage, stringent security arrangements are made by the government. Medical and other facilities are set up at various locations along the route to assist pilgrims.

Routes to Baba Amarnath Dham

The pilgrimage to Baba Amarnath Dham is undertaken through two main routes. The first route starts from Pahalgam, while the second starts from Sonamarg Baltal.

The distance from Pahalgam to Amarnath is approximately 28 kilometres. This route is relatively easier and more convenient.

On the other hand, the distance from Baltal to Amarnath is about 14 kilometres, but this route is comparatively more challenging than the former.
