On the evening of Saturday, June 8, she was unanimously re-elected during a meeting of the party's MPs from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge proposed Sonia Gandhi's reappointment as the leader of the parliamentary party, which received unanimous approval from all MPs.
Earlier, a proposal was passed in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting to nominate Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
When asked if Rahul Gandhi is ready to take on the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Congress leader K.C. Venugopal said, "He must take up the position of Leader of the Opposition. After all, the people want him there. The I.N.D.I.A team and Congress members also want him in that role."
Regarding the discussions in the meeting, Veerappa Moily, Former Chief Minister of Karnataka said, "We need to discuss several things—the way Congress and the I.N.D.I.A team have gained a significant percentage of votes and seats. Of course, we should have won and come to power, and Rahul Gandhi should have become the Prime Minister of this country, but we missed it. Now, Narendra Modi is not as great; in terms of popularity and vote share. I think we are moving forward, and if not today, then tomorrow, Congress will definitely make a comeback under Rahul Gandhi's leadership."
