Manipur Violence: The Manipur Government has decided to prolong the internet service ban in the crisis-affected state for an additional five days until June 15.
An official release stated that the extension aims to prevent the dissemination of false news, rumours, and misinformation on social media platforms, which have the potential to disrupt law and order.
The ban will remain in effect until 3 pm on June 15, as per the statement. However, Manipur's Information and Public Relations Minister, DR Sapam Ranjan, reported that there have been no untoward incidents in the state within the past 24 hours, indicating a gradual return to normalcy.
The minister addressed the media and mentioned that there are currently 349 operational relief camps throughout Manipur. Ethnic violence has plagued Manipur, with Chief Minister N Biren Singh previously stating that approximately 60 people have lost their lives in the clashes.
Incidents of house burnings and sporadic violence continue to be reported in certain parts of the state. The minister also disclosed that out of the 4,537 looted weapons, the state government has recovered 990.
Efforts are being made to ensure peace and harmony, including joint combing operations conducted by security forces for the fourth consecutive day in sensitive areas across both hills and valleys, leading to the recovery of 22 weapons.
A committee was formed after Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Manipur from May 29 to June 1, during which he assessed the situation and announced the formation of a peace panel to expedite the restoration of normalcy.
The central government has deployed paramilitary forces in response to the escalating violence in Manipur, which has been enduring ethnic violence for a month following a court directive to consider including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes list.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh held a meeting on Saturday to address the ongoing situation in Manipur, where sporadic violence has persisted for a month following ethnic clashes.
Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the significance of peace and stability in Manipur and stated that he would report the details discussed during the meeting to the Union Home Minister for further action.
However, he mentioned that he was unable to meet with Kuki leaders on that day and characterized his visit as a goodwill gesture.
