Just before the voting for the assembly elections in Punjab, Congress has suffered another setback. Senior Congress leader and former Law Minister Ashwini Kumar on Tuesday decided to resign from the primary membership of the Congress. He has sent his resignation by writing a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi. In the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, Ashwini Kumar was the Law Minister. For 46 years, he was a member of Congress. After resigning from Congress, he said that he can work better for the country by staying outside the party.
Former Law Minister Ashwani Kumar on Tuesday sent his resignation to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, days before the Punjab Assembly elections. He said that he can work better for the country by staying outside the party. In his resignation letter, he said that I am leaving the party after a long association of 46 years and hope to continue to work proactively for the people inspired by such a transformational leadership, which reflects the liberal democracy given by our freedom fighters. He also thanked the Congress President for his past responsibilities and wished him good health. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha thrice from 2002 to 2016. He has also been the Additional Solicitor General.
Ashwani Kumar has resigned from Congress a few days before the polling for the Punjab Assembly elections on February 20. Earlier, on January 25, former Union Minister Ratanjit Pratap Narain Singh (also known as RPN Singh) had resigned from Congress. Ashwani Kumar has now joined the list of prominent young leaders who left the Congress, who were once considered to be in an important role in the Congress.
Earlier, former Union ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia and Jitin Prasada joined the BJP, while some leaders like Luizinho Faleiro, Sushmita Dev and Ashok Tanwar joined the Trinamool Congress. Even before the resignation of Ashwani Kumar, the old Congress leaders are seen to be disillusioned with the party. As a result of this, veteran Congress leaders are leaving the party and joining other parties.
