Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, has appointed Satya Nadella as its chairman. Indian-origin Nadella has been the CEO of the company for the last 7 years. The company has scaled new heights under his leadership and he has now been rewarded for it. He will replace John Thomson who will once again return to the role of Lead Independent Director. Thomson was made chairman in 2014. Prior to that, he was the Lead Independent Director on the Board of the Company.
Nadella, 53, was made the CEO of Microsoft in 2014. When he took over the position, the company was going through a lot of troubles. Nadella not only pulled Microsoft out of these troubles but also took it to new heights. He focused on cloud computing, mobile applications and artificial intelligence, while also reviving the office software franchise.
During his tenure, Microsoft's share prices increased more than seven times and the company's market cap reached close to $2 trillion. Satya Nadella is the company's third CEO and will be the third chairman in the company's history. Earlier, Bill Gates and Thomson had been the chairman of the company. Before Nadella, Steve Ballmer was the CEO of the company. Thomson, 72, will remain active as a lead independent director and oversee Nadella's compensation, success planning, governance and board operations, the company said in a statement.
Satya Nadella was born in the year 1967 in Hyderabad, India. His father was an administrative officer and his mother was a Sanskrit lecturer. After doing his early education from Hyderabad Public School, he studied electrical engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology in the year 1988 and after that went to America to do MS in Computer Science. He did his MBA from the Booth School of Business, Chicago in 1996.
