Girls living in the hills of Jammu and Kashmir and near IB-LoC are also as strong as Mirabai Chanu. If she gets better facilities and proper guidance, she can win medals for the country. This was stated by Olympic winner Chanu's coach and Akhnoor resident Vijay Sharma.
Dronacharya Awardee Vijay Sharma has always been associated with his village Sohal Tanda. He had reached his village before participating in the Olympics. He informed that in the future training will be given to promote weightlifting in Jammu. For this, he wants to open the best academy. Girls from the hilly and border areas of the entire state including Jammu are equally capable as all the athletes participating in the Olympics. They just need to be motivated to do their best. He said that J&K Weightlifting Association is doing good work continuously.
Sharma told that his attachment to Sohal Tanda village of Akhnoor never diminished. I definitely come to the village once a year with the whole family. It is important to keep the children connected to the village and their roots. He told that his father had joined the army at the age of 16. After retiring, he moved to Modinagar in 1968-69 in search of work.
I have been working with Mirabai Chanu since 2014. When we could not win a medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016, that failure inspired us instead of disheartening. Taking lessons from 2016, we kept every step focused on the Olympics. 2016 changed the pattern in which we were training and continued our preparation with positive thinking. We started seeing the results of this. In 2017 Mira became the world champion. Won Gold in Commonwealth Games in 2018. In 2019 again won the medal at the World Championships. That is, after 2016, every step of ours was focused on preparing for the Olympics.
In these five years of journey, we have seen good days and bad days, but we never let our goals fade away. The cooperation of the government was very good in this. Sent to the US twice for good training, which further strengthened our preparation, the target was for the gold medal, but we managed to win the silver.
He told the local youth that one has to stay away from drugs to move ahead and do better in sports. You have to continue your training regularly with discipline. You have to do your training thinking that if Mirabai Chanu can bring a medal then we can also win.
