  • The ICMR guidelines state that for skin and soft tissue infections, antibiotics should be given for five days.

  • In diseases like pneumonia, antibiotics can be given to the patient for up to 5 days.

  • Antibiotics have been advised for 8 days for pneumonia patients admitted to the hospital.

Generally, antibiotic therapy is recommended for a select group of patients suffering from severe sepsis and septic shock, pneumonia, ventilator-associated pneumonia and necrotizing fasciitis.

Doctors need to make necessary assessments and then make a plan regarding the duration of therapy and give medicines.

New Guidelines of ICMR: Overuse of antibiotics is making the drugs ineffective

According to the data of ICMR, about 20 lakh cases of infection are reported every year, of which 23,000 deaths occur. Scientists also said that in view of Covid-19, the use of antimicrobial medicines has increased a lot.

In this perspective, making this guideline is even more important. ICMR has warned that since Covid-19, many essential antibiotics and antifungal drugs have started to be neutralized. Therefore, antibiotics should not be used unnecessarily under any circumstances.

An ICMR survey conducted between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021, found that 'carbapenem' antibiotics are now proving ineffective in people falling ill in India.

According to the data of this survey, the cases of antibiotic resistance are increasing very fast and due to this, difficulties have started coming in the treatment of people with the help of antibiotics.
