Imran Khan has been deposed from power in Pakistan after a long period of high-voltage drama. The no-confidence resolution was supported by 174 members of the Pakistan National Assembly. The opposition needed to get 172 votes to pass a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan. Now the Leader of the Opposition Shahbaz Sharif is ready to become the new Prime Minister of Pakistan.

At a joint press conference of the opposition parties on March 30, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari announced Shehbaz Sharif as the opposition's pick for Prime Minister. Today, April 10, Shahbaz will reportedly meet with President Arif Alvi. On Monday at 2 p.m., the National Assembly will reconvene to elect the house's leader.

Who is Shahbaz Sharif?

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is led by Shahbaz Sharif (PML-N). He is the younger brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and was born in 1950 in Lahore to an industrialist family. He also served three terms as the Chief Minister of Punjab Province. In August 2018, Shahbaz Sharif declared his candidacy for Prime Minister. The Bhutto-led PPP, on the other hand, decided to abstain from the PM vote at the last minute, allowing Imran Khan to be elected Prime Minister. He graduated from Lahore's Government College University. In 1985, Sharif was elected President of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

First elected to the Punjab Provincial Assembly in 1988

In 1988, he was elected to the Punjab Provincial Assembly, and in 1990, he was elected to the National Assembly. In 1993, he again contested the provincial elections and became the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly. In 1997, he became the chief minister of Punjab province for the first time. Following a military coup conducted by then-Pakistani army head Pervez Musharraf in 1999, Shahbaz Sharif was imprisoned and then deported to Saudi Arabia. In 2007, the PML-N head returned to Pakistan, and the following year he was elected as the chief minister of Punjab state for the third time. After his elder brother was found guilty in a case involving the Panama Papers, he entered national politics in 2017. In February 2018, he was elected unopposed as the President of the PML-N.

In September 2020, Shahbaz Sharif was detained by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on significant corruption charges. Shahbaz is said to have good relations with the Pakistani army.
