70-Year-Old Man Beaten to Death for Complaining Against Theft, 8 Arrested

Palghar district of Maharashtra: A 70-year-old man from Vasai was allegedly lynched by a group over a complaint of theft he had lodged against some of them.

The police have so far arrested eight persons in connection with the incident. The incident took place on Friday evening in Rangoon area of Vasai. The victim was identified as Ramchandra Raut. After the attack he was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead, the police told the agency.

Hemant Kumar Katkar, the spokesperson of Palghar district rural police, told the agency that the accused came to Raut's house and questioned him why he had lodged a complaint with the police that some of them had stolen his pigeons. While one of them allegedly strangled him, others rained blows on him and kicked him.

Meanwhile, one of the Raut's relatives lodged a complaint against the accused at Vasai police station.

However, the accused were arrested and booked under the sections 302 (murder), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
