The company has officially shared this information on its Twitter account.

Instagram has released a post on Twitter and it clearly states that the company is testing direct messaging for the web, after which you can read and reply to the message anywhere. Along with the tweet, the company has also shared its desktop image. Direct messaging feature is already available for mobile users and now web users will also be able to take advantage of it.

Instagram has not yet revealed how long the feature will be rolled out. But it is expected that desktop users will not have to wait much for this.
