Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said on Saturday that by the year 2024, India will be the first country in the world to make the highest investment in Jal Jeevan Mission.

He was addressing the 11th edition of the Isha Yoga Centre at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu on 26 November. He said India's estimated investment in the water sector from 2019 to 2024 at $210 billion, the highest in the world.

In conversation with Sadhguru, founder of Isha Foundation, the Union Minister said that the Jal Jeevan Mission aims to provide safe and sufficient drinking water in rural India through individual household tap connections to all households by 2024. He said that we all have to work together to make it a success.

Ministry is involving the rural community to ensure water quality

According to the Jal Jeevan Mission dashboard, 16 per cent of Indian households had a tap water connection in 2019, which has now increased to 54 per cent.

Jal Shakti Minister Shekhawat, however, pointed out that the focus of the mission is not only limited to access to water, but also to ensure quality of water.

The Union Minister said that to ensure water quality in rural areas, the Ministry is involving the rural community and leveraging technology to create innovative solutions.

Shekhawat pointed out that it started building water and sanitation committees in each village, consisting of 21 people with a minimum of 50 per cent women.

It may be noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched this ambitious scheme “Jal Jeevan Mission” of the Government of India, announcing from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15, 2019, with the objective of providing functional household tap connections to every household in the country by 2024.
