Zydus Cadila, one of India's largest pharmaceutical companies, may apply to the Central Drugs Regulator for emergency use approval of its corona vaccine ZyCov-D next week. Official sources gave this information on Friday.

If this vaccine is approved, it will be the world's first DNA vaccines against coronavirus. With this, the number of vaccines available in the country will increase to 4. So far, Serum Institute's Coveshield, Bharat Biotech's Covaxin and Russia's Sputnik V are being used in India.

Phase 3 trial data analysis almost ready

An official source told news agency PTI that the data analysis of Phase 3 of the vaccination trial is almost ready. The company has informed the government that it can apply for a license for emergency use of the vaccine next week. Apart from adults, this vaccine is also being tested on children aged 12 to 18 years.

The source said that if this Ahmedabad-based company comes up for licenses next week, hopefully, we have enough data to see if this vaccine can be given to children as well.

No need for the cold chain for storage

DNA-plasmid based ZyCoV-D will be a three-dose vaccine. It can be stored at a temperature of 2 to 4 °C. This does not require a cold chain. This makes its transportation easy in remote areas of the country. The National Biopharma Mission has helped in developing this vaccine.

This is how this vaccine works

When plasmid DNA enters the human body, it becomes a viral protein. It makes the body feel like a real attack of the virus. This develops a strong immune response to the virus in the body. This stops the virus from growing. If a virus changes its shape, that is, there is a mutation in it, then this vaccine can be changed in a few weeks.
