US Pledges to Help People Leave Afghanistan after August 31 Withdrawn Deadline

After the Taliban has taken complete control of Afghanistan, countries are evacuating Afghan people along with their citizens. Meanwhile, secretary of state Antony Blinken has informed that the US will continue to help people to leave Afghanistan after the 31 August deadline.

During a press conference, Blinken said, 'Since August 14, more than 82,300 people have been safely evacuated from Kabul. Of the 6,000 US citizens identified in Afghanistan, at least 4,500 and their families have been evacuated. Around 1,500 Americans could still evacuate from Afghanistan. There are very active efforts on the way – underway on the part of regional countries to see whether they can play a role in keeping the airport open once our military mission leaves or, as necessary, reopening it if it closes for some period of time."

Over 82,000 people evacuated so far:

Blinken further said, "A very active effort that's underway as we speak. And again, with regard to our own potential presence going forward after the 31st. We are looking at a number of options. The Taliban have made clear that they have a strong interest in having a functioning airport. We and the rest of the international community certainly have a strong interest in that, primarily for the purpose of making sure that anyone who wants to leave can leave past the 31st using an airport."

"There is no deadline on our work to help any remaining American citizens who decide they want to leave to do so, along with many Afghans who have stood by us over these many years, and want to leave, and have been unable to do so. That effort will continue, every day, past August 31," he added.
