WTC Final: New Zealand Becomes First-Ever World Test Champions

The New Zealand team on Wednesday became the ICC World Test Champion after defeating Team India by 8 wickets in the final played in Southampton. The New Zealand team has won an ICC World Cup for the first time in its 91-year history. The Kiwi team played its first match against England on 10 January 1930. Since then, the team hasn't won any World Cup. At the same time, Kyle Jameson, who took 5 wickets in the first innings and 7 in the second innings, was adjudged the player of the match.

Also, New Zealand has defeated the Indian team for the second time in the final of an ICC tournament. Earlier, in the final of the Champions Trophy in 2000 (ODI format), India was defeated by 4 wickets. Test champion New Zealand team won prize money of $ 1.6 million (about Rs 11.88 crore) as well as the Test Championship mace. At the same time, Team India, which lost in the final, got $ 8 lakh (about Rs 5.95 crore).

Australia finished 3rd in the WTC:

Australian team, which finished third in the Test Championship, was given $ 4.5 lakh (about Rs 3.38 crore). The team fourth on the table – England team will be awarded $350,000 (Rs.2.62 crore) and one that finishes fifth (Pakistan) gets $200,000 (Rs.1.5 crore approx) while the remaining four teams will get $100,000 each (Rs.75 lakh per team).

Poor start for Team India:

The result of the match came out on the reserve day after about two and a half days of play was washed away due to rain. Batting first, India scored 217 runs after losing the toss in the match. In reply, New Zealand scored 249 runs. After this, in the second innings, Team India was all out for 170 runs and set a target of 139 runs. New Zealand won the match by scoring 140 for the loss of 2 wickets.

In the second innings, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson scored an unbeaten 52 runs and Ross Taylor scored 47 not out. This is Williamson's 33rd fifty of Test career. Opener Devon Conway scored 19 and Tom Latham scored 9. Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took 2 wickets.
