India, a Nation on the Rise, is Not Being Provocative: Justin Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stressed that his administration has no intention of "antagonising or creating issues" with New Delhi, saying that India is a "rising significance" country.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has highlighted his country's growing importance while emphasising his government's intention not to stoke tensions or cause problems.

This revelation comes amid a diplomatic row between India and Canada, sparked by Trudeau's suggestion of a "potential link" between Indian government agents and the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a self-proclaimed Khalistani terrorist whom he referred to as a "Canadian citizen."

When asked about India's relationship with Western nations and Canada's allies' relative silence on the ongoing matter, Trudeau emphasised India's growing importance on the global stage and the importance of continued cooperation, not just within the region but globally.

He emphasised that Canada's aims were not to foment conflict but to preserve the principles of the rule of law, protect its citizens, and champion its core values.

"That's why we call on the government of India to work with us, to establish processes to uncover the truth of the matter and to allow justice and accountability to be served," Trudeau said of the Indian government's participation in the inquiry.

He revealed that he had a "direct and frank" chat with Prime Minister Narendra Modi a few days previously at the G20 Summit, during which he stated his concerns.

Throughout his remarks, Trudeau referred to Hardeep Singh Nijjar as a "Canadian," emphasising his dedication to the rule of law and the pursuit of justice.

Nijjar was labelled a terrorist by India in 2020, and he was killed earlier this year in a deliberate shooting outside a gurdwara in Surrey, Canada.

India Reacts Strongly to Trudeau

In reaction to Trudeau's charges, India angrily denied any involvement and swiftly expelled top Canadian diplomat Olivier Sylvester.

The Indian government has now suspended Indian visa applications for Canadian nationals residing in any country.

Trudeau's remarks reflect Canada's wish to preserve a positive relationship with India while also addressing concerns about Canadian citizens' safety and adherence to international rules.

The conflict between the two countries continues, with India dismissing the allegations and demanding evidence to back up Trudeau's claims.
