Anti-government protests have intensified in Bangladesh. When thousands of people took to the streets on Saturday, the whole system came crashing down.
General elections are due in Bangladesh in 2024. Even before this, the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has opened a front against the ruling Awami League.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is demanding that the current Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, and her government resign immediately.
Also, the opposition wants the next general elections to be held under the supervision of the caretaker government instead of ruling Awami League.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party had called for a rally in the capital Dhaka demanding the resignation of the current government.
The Gopalbagh Maidan in Sayedabad, Dhaka was filled to capacity even before the start of the rally. In other cities of the country too, people took to the streets and demonstrated.
The Sheikh Hasina government had imposed restrictions on these demonstrations. Despite this, a large number of people gathered.
These people are demanding immediate elections in Bangladesh. Doubts were raised during the rally that if the elections are held under the leadership of the present government, the people connected with power may rig the elections.
Due to the rally, the situation in Dhaka became very bad. Workers of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, who took to the road before the rally, also clashed with the police. One person died and many were injured in this.
