Afghanistan Earthquake: In a recent seismic event, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale struck the western region of Afghanistan, causing widespread destruction and claiming the lives of nearly 2,000 people.

The epicenter of this seismic activity was located approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) northwest of Herat city, near the Iranian border.

The earthquake's impact has been particularly severe on several villages located in the vicinity of Herat city, resulting in extensive damage to buildings.

Many individuals are still trapped under the rubble, and the search and rescue efforts are ongoing. Survivors have reported feeling at least three powerful tremors during the catastrophe.

The disaster has left several villages in ruins, with numerous buildings severely damaged and people trapped beneath the debris. Despite the challenges, local authorities and rescue teams continue their efforts to locate and rescue survivors.

Abdul Wahid Rayan, spokesperson for the Ministry of Information and Culture, stated that the reported death toll from the earthquake in Herat may actually be higher than initially estimated.

He appealed for immediate assistance, as approximately six villages have been completely devastated, and numerous citizens remain trapped beneath the debris.

An update confirmed that 465 houses have been destroyed, and 135 others have suffered significant damage.

Earthquake's Epicenter Was Near Herat City

The catastrophe has had its most devastating impact on four villages within the Zinda Jan district of Herat province, affected not only by the initial earthquake but also by subsequent aftershocks.

The United States Geological Survey reported that the epicentre of the earthquake was approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) northwest of Herat city.

Following the main earthquake, three significant aftershocks with magnitudes of 6.3, 5.9, and 5.5 also occurred, further adding to the region's distress.

Local authorities, rescue teams, and international relief agencies are mobilizing to provide aid and support to the affected communities.

The situation remains fluid, and efforts are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage and provide essential assistance to those in need.
