Women National Boxing Championship: Sonia Chahal and Meenakumari Devi Makes it to Semifinals

Sonia Chahal (57 kg), who won a silver medal at the World Championships last year and Cologne World Cup gold medalist Meenakumari Devi (54 kg), clinched the semi-finals of the fourth Elite Women's National Boxing Championship here on Friday. Sonia, who won gold in 2016 and bronze in 2017 in this tournament, defeated Vinayakshi of Himachal Pradesh 3-2 in a tough match in the quarterfinals of the 57 kg weight category.  Meenakumari Devi defeated Jharkhand's Sabiha Khanam 5-0 in a unilateral style in the quarter-finals of the 54 kg weightline. Kavita Chahal, Arjuna Award winner and gold medal winner at the 2019 World Police Games, continued her strong performance here in the over 81 kg weight category.

Kavita, who twice won a bronze medal at the Women's World Boxing Championships, beat Rajasthan's Burbara Sampasan 5-0, moving her way closer to the gold medal. Former youth world champion Shashi Chopra performed brilliantly in the 60 kg weight category, defeating Manju of Chandigarh 5-0 in their quarterfinal match. Apart from him, former young world champion Ankushita Boro of Assam defeated Abisak Vanlalavamavi of Mizoram 5-0 in the unilateral match of 64 kg weight category. India Open champion Bhagyavati Kachari continued her aggressive performance in the 81 kg weight category.

Lalita of Rajasthan and Anjali of Delhi entered their next round of 69 kg weight category. Nupur of Haryana took a very aggressive stand against Uttarakhand's Neha Chauhan in the 75 kg weight category, which caused the referee to stop the match in the first round itself. India Open runner-up Vanlal Dauti had no trouble reaching the final four by defeating Deep Kumari of Madhya Pradesh 5-0 in 51kg while Ritu of Chandigarh beat Delhi's Jyoti 5-0 in 57kg. Among the Punjab boxers, Parminder Kaur (81 kg), Meenakshi (48 kg) and Mandeep Kaur Sandhu (57 kg) also made it to the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be played on Saturday while the final will be played on Sunday.
