Kargil War Between India and Pakistan: Celebrations have started across the country in the joy of completing 22 years of India's victory in the Kargil War. 'Kargil Vijay Diwas' is celebrated every year to remember the sacrifice of the soldiers who died in this war. This battle took place between India and Pakistan on the high hills of Kargil. 'Operation Vijay' begins

The fighting started when Pakistani soldiers and terrorists infiltrated Indian territory. The infiltrators positioned themselves at prominent places, which also gave them a strategic advantage during the start of the conflict (Kargil Vijay Diwas Background). Based on the information given by the local shepherds, the Indian Army traced all the places of infiltration and then 'Operation Vijay' was started.

Initially, Pakistan's army was getting the advantage due to being at a high altitude, but even this did not reduce the morale of the Indian soldiers and in the end, they waved the flag of victory. The army again announced on 26 July 1999 that the mission had been completed successfully (Operation Vijay). Since that day, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year. However, this victory proved to be very expensive for India. Official figures show that 527 soldiers of India were martyred, while 357-453 soldiers of Pakistan were killed.

What was the reason for the fight?

The soldiers and terrorists of Pakistan had made their bases by infiltrating the high mountains of Kargil. Since he was at a height, he also took advantage of it (Reasons Behind Kargil War). With this, he was able to fire comfortably on the Indian soldiers present in the lower part. Pakistan shot down two Indian fighter jets during the war. While another fighter plane crashed during the operation. But after seeing itself trapped, Pakistan asked America to intervene but there it had to face it.

The then PM of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif (Nawaz Sharif Kargil War) spoke to the then US President Bill Clinton. But Clinton made it clear that he would not do so until Pakistani troops were withdrawn from the Line of Control. Then as the Pakistani troops withdrew, the Indian troops attacked the rest of the posts and by 26 July managed to get back the last of them as well.
