West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will file her nomination from the Bhowanipore Assembly seat today. By-polls is to be held here on 30 September. In the political circles, everyone’s eyes are fixed on this seat. However, to remain in the chief minister’s chair, Mamta will have to win from here at any cost. Let us tell you that during the Vidhan Sabha elections this year, she had lost the Nandigram seat to BJP’s Shubhendu Adhikari. Banerjee will have to take membership in the state assembly by November 5.
Senior party leader Sobhandev Chattopadhyay had resigned as Trinamool Congress MLA from Bhowanipore to clear the way for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to become a member of the state assembly by contesting a by-election. BJP’s candidate and actor Rudranil Ghosh was defeated by Chattopadhyay in this seat by about 28,000 votes. Since 2011, Banerjee has won the Bhowanipore seat twice.
Who is against Mamta?
BJP can field Priyanka Tibrewal against Mamta Banerjee. According to the sources, Tibrewal has also been a legal advisor to BJP leader Babul Supriyo. However, Priyanka Tibrewal joined BJP in the year 2014 only on the behest of Babul Supriyo. Left Front has fielded Shreejib Biswas of CPM from the Bhowanipore seat. Also, Sobhan Deb Chattopadhyay, who was the MLA of Bhowanipore, will now contest from the Khardaha assembly seat.
Congress left the field
A day after promising to field its candidate against Mamata Banerjee in the Bhowanipore poll, the Congress took a U-turn and said the party would not pit anyone against the Trinamool Congress supremo. State Congress President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that as per the instructions of the AICC, the Congress will neither field any candidate against Banerjee nor campaign against her before September 30 by-polls.
