Wellknown Film Director Basu Chatterjee Dies at Age of 90

Renowned film director and writer Basu Chatterjee has passed away at the age of 90 in his sleep at 8.30 am. He died today at his home in Santacruz, Mumbai. Basu Da was ill for a long time and he already had diabetes and high blood pressure.

Filmmaker Ashok Pandit told about the death of Basu Chatterjee that Basu Da has died due to age related diseases and he will be cremated at 2.00 pm today at the crematorium in Santacruz.

During the 70s and 80s attempts to bring Hindi cinema to the surface of reality, Basu da decided to stop at Chittachor, Rajni, Khatta-Meetha, Piya ka Ghar, Chakravyuh, Shaukeen, , Directed many films such as Jeena yhaa, Priyatma, Swami, Apne Paraye, Ek Hukta Faisal and established a distinct identity in the world of Hindi cinema.

Apart from these, he also made less popular films like Ratnadeep,  Humari bahu Alka, Kamala ki maut, Triacritra.

Basu Da made his debut in the 1969 film Sara Akash. Basu Da worked as an assistant to director Basu Bhattacharya in the Raj Kapoor and Waheeda Rehman starrer film Teesri Kasam, released in 1966, before directing the film Sara Akash.

It is noteworthy that Basu Da started his career as an illustrator and cartoonist with the popular weekly newspaper 'Blitz' of his era. He worked for this newspaper for 18 years and then after that he decided to join films and direct films.

Making films with middle-class problems was one of Basu Da's greatest specialties. Basu Da also directed very popular serials for Doordarshan such as Byomkesh Bakshi, Rajnigandha, which are still remembered for his best films.
