Wimbledon 2021: Ashleigh Barty Beats Karolina Pliskova to Win her Maiden Title

Top-seeded Australia's Ashleigh Barty on Saturday won her maiden women's singles Wimbledon title, the third tennis Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Top-seeded Australia's Ashleigh Barty on Saturday won her maiden women's singles Wimbledon title, the third tennis Grand Slam tournament of the year. She defeated 8th seed Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 in the final match played on Saturday. The match lasted for 1 hour and 56 minutes. Barty, 25, has previously been a professional cricketer and has played for Brisbane Heat and Queensland Fire in the Women's Big Bash League.

First Australian women's champion since 1980:

After 41 years, an Australian player has won the women's singles title at Wimbledon. Prior to her, Evooone Goolagong Cawley won this title in 1980. Barty has won a Grand Slam title for the second time. Prior to this, she has won the women's singles title at the French Open in 2019.

Barty easily won the first set by 6-3. But, Pliskova came back strongly in the second set to make it into a tie-breaker. The Czech player won the tiebreaker 7-4 to level the match at 1-1. However, Barty regained her momentum in the third set, winning it 6–3 as in the first set to win the match and the title.

Barty played cricket for two years:

Ashleigh Barty took a break from tennis after the US Open in 2014. After that, she decided to try her luck in cricket. However, she impressed everyone with her cricketing skills and got selected in the Brisbane Heat team for the Women's Big Bash League. She played for Brisbane Heat in the 2015–16 season. Later she also became a part of the Queensland Fire Team. After the Big Bash League in 2016, she made comeback to the tennis court again.
