Tokyo Olympics: Ravi Dahiya Wins Silver Medal, Loses to ROC’s Zavur Uguev in Final

Indian wrestler Ravi Dahiya on Thursday won silver medal after suffering defeat against Russian Olympic Committee's (ROC) Zavur Uguev in the men's 57 kg freestyle category at the Tokyo Olympics. Uguev dominated the match from the beginning as India lost the chance to win its first gold medal in wrestling. India had high expectations of gold medal from Ravi as no player from India had won a gold medal for the last 12 years. Earlier, Abhinav Bindra won gold medal in 2008 Beijing Olympics in shooting.

Ravi lost to Uguev, who was the 2018 and 2019 World Championship winner. He is considered one of the best wrestlers from Russia. He has won 15 medals in 16 international competitions in his career so far. It also includes 13 gold medals.

Ravi turned the match at the last minute in the semi-finals:

Earlier, fourth seed Ravi Dahiya had made it to the final after defeating Kazakhstan's Nurislam Sanayev in the semi-finals. Once, he was trailing by 8 points in the semi-finals. Indian sports fans were losing their hopes, but at the last moment, Ravi knocked the Kazakh wrestler out of the match. He was declared the winner under the Victory by Fall rule.

Ravi won gold medal in 2020 and 2021 Asian Championships:

Both Ravi and Uguyev have faced each other in the past at the 2019 World Championships. Then the Russian wrestler defeated the Indian wrestler 6-4. Ravi had to settled with the bronze medal here. He had won gold medals in the 2020 and 2021 Asian Championships. At the same time, Ravi managed to win a silver medal in the 2018 Under-23 Championship.

Earlier, wrestler Sushil Kumar had set a record for India by winning two consecutive medals at the Olympics. Sushil became the first Indian to do so by winning a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Before Ravi, India has won five medals in wrestling.
