Tokyo Olympics: Boxer Lovlina Borgohain Reaches Quarters Finals, One Win Away from Medal

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain has reached the quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics. In the pre-quarterfinals of the women's Welterweight division (64 to 69kg), 23-year-old Lovlina defeated Germany's Nadine Apetz at the Kokugikan Arena on Tuesday. She won the bout 3-2 by split decision. The overall verdict of the judges in all three rounds was in favor of Lovlina Borgohain. She is now just one win away from securing a medal. In boxing, at least a bronze medal is confirmed as soon as player reach the semi-finals. Lovlina's quarterfinal bout will take place on July 30 against China's Chen Nien-Chin.

In boxing, only one Indian woman boxer MC Mary Kom has won an Olympic medal till now. She won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She has also reached the pre-quarterfinals in the Tokyo Olympics.

Performance of Indian players in shooting events:

On the other hand, the disappointing performance of Indian shooters in shooting events continues. Four Indian pairs took part in two different events on Tuesday but none of them could make it to the medal round. In the 10m Air Pistol Missed event, the pair of Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary finished seventh in the qualification round-2. At the same time, the pair of Yashaswini Deswal and Abhishek Verma were eliminated in the qualifying round-1. In 10m Air Rifle, the pair of Divyansh Singh Panwar and Elavenil Valarivan finished 12th in the qualification round. The pair of Anjum Mudgil and Deepak Kumar finished 18th.

Table Tennis: Sharath Kamal knocked out of a medal race

India's Achanta Sharath Kamal knocked out of a medal race in men's singles table tennis. No. 1 seed Ma Long of China defeated him 4-1. Long won the first game 11-7. Meanwhile, Sharath made a strong comeback in the second game to win 11-8. The Chinese player did not give Kamal any chance after that and went on to win the next three games 31-11, 11-4, 11-4.
