Former Union Minister Chinmayanand was arrested on September 20 for raping a student of a law college in Shahjahanpur. After this Chinmayananda also filed a counter complaint, in which he alleged that the law student and three boys were trying to recover Rs five crore from him.

The police arrested the four, including the student, on charges of extortion after a video clip surfaced. Students and boys appeared in the video discussing the issue. The woman alleged that Chinmayanand, who runs several ashrams and educational institutions, sexually abused her last year after helping her for her admission to law college. The student had alleged that he allegedly made a video of her taking a bath in the hostel and raped her by blackmailing her. Along with this, the student had alleged that she was allegedly taken to Swami's room at gunpoint and forced to massage her.

The matter became public when the student went missing on August 24 after putting a Facebook post without naming Chinmayananda. Chinmayanand's team then filed an extortion case. When the Uttar Pradesh police found the girl after a week, the Supreme Court heard her allegations and ordered a SIT investigation into the case.
