Amidst the tussle between the government and social media companies on the new IT rules, 4 companies have released compliance reports. Facebook, Google, Instagram and Ku have reported in these reports how many complaints they received related to content and what action was taken on them.

Let us understand, what companies have said in this report? How much content has been removed? Why is it removed? And what are the things you should keep in mind while using social media?

First of all, understand what is compliance report?

Recently, the government has made some new rules for social media, news portals, and OTT platforms in the IT Act. Under these rules, social media platforms with more than 50 lakh users will have to issue a compliance report every month.

This report will detail the complaints received on that platform during a month and the action taken on those complaints. Under this rule, these companies have released their first reports.

Instagram

Instagram has said in its report that it has processed two million posts between May 15 and June 15. Instagram's parent company is also Facebook. Most of the action was taken on Violent Content. Along with this, Instagram took action on about 5 lakh posts related to obscene and sexual activity.

Facebook has said in its report that between May 15 and June 15, it has processed more than 30 million posts and content. These posts were against Facebook's community standards. Action has been taken on these content in more than 10 categories. The company has said that the final report will be released on July 15, which will also contain information about WhatsApp.

Google has the highest 96% of copyright infringement complaints

Google has also released the compliance report from April 1 to April 30. The company has said that during this period it had received more than 27 thousand complaints of which 96% were copyright infringement. During this time, the company has removed about 59 thousand posts and content from Google and YouTube. The company says that in the next compliance report, it will give more category-wise information.

Ku first released the compliance report

Ku is the first company to issue a compliance report under the new rules. While releasing the report first, Ku had said that in June, the company received a total of 5 thousand complaints from the user, out of which 1200 posts have been removed. Along with this, the company has taken action on 54 thousand 235 posts by staying ahead, out of which 2 thousand have been removed and action has been taken on the rest. These actions include giving warnings, blurring a photo, and more.

Is this the first time social media companies have taken such action?

No, Social media companies are already monitoring what you are sharing. Right now the only new thing is that companies are now making public information about how many complaints have been received by the companies and what action has been taken on them. Because in the new IT rules it has been asked to do so.

Why was this content removed?

In fact, with the increasing use of social media platforms, there has been an increase in cybercrime as well. All social sites have their own guidelines to deal with this. These guidelines tell you what to do and what not to do while using social media. The purpose of creating these guidelines is to make the digital space safe for use by all.

Understand from cyber expert Sunny Wadhwani what you  should keep in mind while posting on social media

  1. Avoid sharing undressed photos or videos of young children. Social media platforms automatically categorize such content as child pornography, which can lead to your account being permanently closed.
  2. Do not send obscene, threatening, or abusive messages to anyone. Even while sharing a meme jokingly, keep in mind that it should not hurt anyone's feelings, be abusive, or obscene.
  3. Threatening to make a photo viral by editing it incorrectly can also send you to jail.
  4. Do not post your photos on social media with drugs, suicide or self-injury, and weapons. Social sites remove such content immediately.
  5. Do not share blackmailing, hate speech, and content that destroys or undermines someone's privacy. Don't even comment like this on social media.
  6. Depending on the seriousness of the matter, social media sites may even warn you in advance or block your account outright.
