People in Power are the Real Members of ‘TUKDE-TUKDE’ gang: Chidambaram

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram accused India of slipping 10 places in the democracy index that democratic institutions have been powerless in the current government and that those in power are real 'TUKDE-TUKDE gang'.

The former home minister tweeted, BJP slipped 10 places in democracy index. Anyone who keeps a close watch on the political developments of the last two years is the public that democracy has been crushed and democratic institutions are powerless. "Those who are in power are the real piecemeal gangs," he alleged. Chidambaram said, 'The world is suspicious of the direction in which India is moving. Every patriotic Indian should be worried.'

In fact, India has slipped 10 places to 51st in the Global List of Democracy Index for 2019 by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The organization has cited the main reason for this decline as 'erosion of civil liberties' in the country. According to the list, India's total score was 7.23 in 2018, which has now come down to 6.90. This global list provides a blueprint of the current state of democracy in 165 independent countries and two regions.
