India was elected unopposed to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a temporary member of this apex body for 2021-22 on Wednesday. Let us tell you that this is the 8th time India has been elected as a temporary member of the UNSC. India got 184 votes out of 192 in this election. On the other hand, Pakistan, irritated by this success, said that the temporary membership of India in the Security Council is a matter of concern for us.
According to the report, due to restrictions related to COVID-19, special voting arrangements were made at the UN headquarters. India was almost certain to join the Security Council of 15 countries as a temporary member. India will remain a temporary member of the Asia-Pacific category for the term 2021-22. India's victory was also being decided as it was the only candidate for the only seat in the group.
Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said, "India has always rejected proposals to be raised from this platform, especially issues like Kashmir. Kashmiris are not given their rights and their suppression continues. Pakistan has also been a temporary member seven times."
Let us tell you that in the 193-member United Nations General Assembly, the Speaker, five temporary members of the Security Council and members of the Economic and Social Council are to be elected for the 75th session of the Assembly.
India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti said, We have received overwhelming support and we deeply humbled by the tremendous confidence that the member states of the United Nations have reposed in India,"
