Government to Bring Ordinance on Dispute in Christians in Kerala

The Pinarayi Vijayan government in Kerala will soon bring an ordinance to pacify the dispute between two fetters of Christians. The ordinance would give Jacobite parishioners the right to bury the dead body in their community cemetery. These cemeteries are currently controlled by the Orthodox Ficare of the Malankara Church.

The government decided to issue the ordinance in a cabinet meeting on Wednesday after the two sections of Christians did not agree in negotiations. The decision has been taken by the government after the 91-year-old woman died in Alappuzha district after her funeral was pending for more than a month.

There has been a long-standing confrontation between Jacobite and Orthodox over the property of churches in the state. In a judgment in 2017, the Supreme Court ordered the control of more than a thousand churches in the state from Jacobite to Orthodox. Now the same orthodox class is protesting at the funeral of the Jacobite class dead in the cemeteries, as the clergy who performed the funeral are related to the church and the church is controlled by the orthodox.

The Jacobite class welcomed the promulgation of the ordinance as a brave decision of the government. At the same time, the orthodox class has announced to challenge it in court. Chief Minister Vijayan has said that we have done everything possible to resolve the matter, when the conversation did not lead the way, the government decided to issue an ordinance.
