FMWhatsApp is Controlling the User’s Phone: Security Firm Kaspersky
WhatsApp can be downloaded from Google Play Store, Apple Store and the company's official website. However, apart from this, there are many other sources to download it. Many times users download the wrong version of WhatsApp from these sources. After which they have to face the problem. One such modified Android version of WhatsApp has been found. It can fully control the user's smartphone.
According to the report of cyber security firm Kaspersky, the modified version of WhatsApp is FMWhatsApp 16.80.0. With this app, users are given additional features, which are not in the original app. Because of this, users download it.
Later, all the details accessible from their smartphone can be controlled from the app.
Kaspersky reported that Trojan Triada is present in the new version of FMWhastApp. It also comes with the Advertising Software Development Kit (SDK). With the help of this, it works like this…
- On launching this app that is affected by Trojan, it acquires the unique device identifiers of the device such as Device ID, Subscriber ID, MAC address.
- After that, it sends it to the remote server. Once the information reaches the server, the server registers the new device.
- It then downloads the Trojan payload present in the app to the infected device. After this, it decrypts the content and launches it for operation.
Download payload to phone
Researchers have told about many malware doing this kind of activity through FMWhatsApp. This malware downloads the payload once it is downloaded to the device and this allows hackers to perform multiple functions on the device. This includes displaying full-screen ads, running invisible ads in the background, and activating paid subscriptions without the device owner knowing.
Bank account empty
It was told in the report that FMWhatsApp takes permission to read the SMS of the device. Because of this, it easily starts emptying the bank account by subscribing to the paid subscription.
