Mamata writes to PM: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday regarding the flood situation in some districts of the state. In this, she said that the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has released water through its dams in an unplanned manner, due to which the situation of man-made floods has arisen. Along with this, CM Mamta Banerjee also urged PM Modi to make a plan for the upgradation of dams.
Earlier, the Prime Minister called Banerjee to review the flood situation in West Bengal and assured all assistance from the Center to deal with it. During the conversation, Prime Minister Modi asked if it was raining heavily in West Bengal. The Chief Minister told him that the situation was man-made and the DVC was responsible for it. She told the Prime Minister that the DVC has released water in an unplanned manner, which is making the situation worse in the state.
A corporation official said that the DVC has released 5.43 lakh cusecs of water from July 31 to Tuesday evening. The official said that it is being told that the Chief Minister, who visited the flood-hit Udayanarayanpur in Howrah district, told the Prime Minister that after completing the survey, the administration would send a report to the PMO about the flood situation and the damage caused by it.
After this, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a tweet that Modi assured Banerjee of all possible help from the Center to deal with the situation. The PMO said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the flood situation in some parts of the state after the release of water from the dams. The Prime Minister assured them of all possible central help to deal with the situation. Prime Minister Modi wished for the safety of the people in the affected areas."
It is to be known that due to heavy rains, floods in many places in West Bengal have displaced nearly three lakh people and at least 15 people have died in incidents of house collapse and electrocution. Meanwhile, due to the release of water from DVC dams, Howrah and Hooghly as well as Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Paschim Medinipur and South 24 Parganas districts have been inundated.
Banerjee's program to conduct an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas in Howrah and Hooghly districts had to be postponed due to bad weather, the official said. Instead, she left for Amta in Howrah via road, he said. She may consider going to Khankul for Hooghly once the weather conditions improve. Standing knee-deep in water, Banerjee spoke to the affected people in Amta and assured them of all possible help from the state government.
