Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held an important meeting with Chief Justice NV Ramana and Leader of Opposition Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. The meeting was held to select the new CBI director. The meeting, which lasted 90 minutes, was to shortlist the candidates involved in the race for this post. During this time CJI Ramanna cited an important rule. This led to 2 names being eliminated from the race. Read the story of this meeting.

The selection panel of CBI directors includes Prime Minister Modi, Adhir Ranjan, and CJI Ramna. A news website in its report quoted sources said that the CJI cited 6 months rule in the meeting. Referring to the Supreme Court's decision, the CJI said that the 6-month rule must be followed in the selection of a new director. This rule says that officers whose tenure is less than 6 months, should not be considered for the post of Chief.

During the meeting, Adhir Ranjan supported the CJI's talk. This rule was considered with the support of two people in the 3-member panel and 2 names dropped out of the CBI Director's race. These include BSF Chief Rakesh Asthana, who is retiring on 31 August. Apart from these, the name of NIA Chief YC Modi, retiring on 31 May, was also not considered. However, these two names were being considered at the forefront of this post.

The meeting was to be held 4 months ago

This meeting of Modi, Adhir Ranjan, and CJI was to take place 4 months in advance. But for some reason, could not be tamed. Adhir Ranjan did not object to any name, but he said that the attitude of the government in the selection of candidates was negligent. He had said that he got a list of 109 names for this post on 11 May. On Monday, this list of 10 names remained at one o'clock and at 4 o'clock it left 6 names. The attitude of the Personnel and Training Department is very careless.
