Amid rising coronavirus cases in Japan and Sri Lanka, the US State Department has warned its citizens not to travel to these countries. On Monday, the US State Department said, "This week, the following Travel Advisories have been assessed and reissued with updates, raised to a Level 4 – Do Not Travel: Japan, Sri Lanka."
The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in a new alert said that Americans should avoid all travel to Japan and have anyone vaccinated before traveling there. It added, "Because of the current situation in Japan even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants and should avoid all travel to Japan."
Significantly, this warning given by the US a few months before the Olympics in Tokyo. The Olympics are to be held in Tokyo in July. Japan is witnessing an increase in coronavirus cases. The country has registered a total of 7,14,274 confirmed cases and 12,236 deaths till yesterday (Sunday).
At the same time, Sri Lanka has halted the operation of passenger trains and buses for four days. The country has imposed new travel restrictions to curb the increasing number of cases and deaths due to COVID-19.
The move has been taken after the island nation's leading medical organizations have demanded the government to impose a lockdown for two weeks in the country. Sri Lanka has already banned public ceremonies, parties, weddings and closed schools and universities.
