The US State Department said on Tuesday, "The Communist Party of China has imposed an arbitrary and harsh national security law on Hong Kong. This would end Hong Kong's autonomy and independence. This will also destroy China's achievement. "
According to the Foreign Ministry, Hong Kong has shown the world that independent Chinese people can achieve a lot. Along with being a successful economy in the world, Hong Kong also offers an example of being a society of diversity. Earlier, the US announced a ban on the export of defense equipment and technology to Hong Kong.
China's parliament on Tuesday passed the disputed National Security Act amid worldwide outrage against this law, including Hong Kong. Countries such as the US, Australia and Britain have opposed the law. China is said to be implementing this law to strengthen its hold over Hong Kong. Critics say that Hong Kong's independence from the law would be jeopardized.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the legislation was passed by the National People's Congress Standing Committee with the consent of all members. Under the law, Hong Kong will have a maximum life sentence for a person convicted for activities like treason, terrorism, foreign interference and protest.
