Young Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal is all set to participate in his second Grand Slam main draw after getting direct entry into the Grand Slam US Open. Let us tell you that Nagal lost to his dream player Roger Federer in the first round of his first Grand Slam in 2019.
Sumit played his first Grand Slam US Open last year. He was also the first Indian player to make it to the main draw of a Grand Slam at the age of 25. However, he was defeated 6-4, 1-6, 2-6, 4-6 by Roger Federer in the first round.
Sumit ranked 127th in the world ranking:
Many veterans, including Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, have withdrawn from the US Open to be held from August 31 due to Coronavirus. For this reason, the organizers released a new list of qualified players, in which Sumit, ranked 127th in the world rankings, got direct entry. He is also the last player in the ranking to get direct entry. He has also been the Wimbledon Junior Doubles champion in 2015.
Many veterans ruled out of the tournament:
Due to Coronavirus, defending champion Rafael Nadal and world number-1 Ashleigh Barty have withdrawn from the US Open. At the same time, Federer Switzerland will not play any tournament this year due to knee surgery. Apart from these, former champions Stan Wawrinka, Nick Kyrgios, Fabio Fognini and Gael Monfils are also not playing in the US Open.
For the first time in 21 years, Nadal-Federer will not play in a Grand Slam:
This will be the first time since 1999 that both Nadal and Federer will not be seen in the main draw of any Grand Slam tournament. Nadal, who won 19 Grand Slams, had a chance to match Federer’s record of winning 20 titles at the US Open.
