Former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka and Naomi Osaka will compete on Saturday in the final of the US Open Women’s Singles. The two will face each other in the finals of their second consecutive tournament.
The final of the Western and Southern Open tournament was also held between the two just before the US Open. Osaka then withdrew from the match due to hamstring injury and Azarenka won the title. This was the 21st title of Azarenka’s career. She won the first title after the Miami Open in 2016.
Earlier, Azarenka defeated 6-time champion Serena Williams of the US 6–1, 3–6, 3–6 in the semi-finals of the US Open. This was her 11th consecutive win and defeated Serena for the first time at the tournament.
Azarenka reached the final of a Grand Slam after 2013. There have been 23 bouts between the two so far. In this, Serena has won 18 and Azarenka has won 5 matches. Serena had previously defeated Azarenka in the finals of the 2012 and 2013 tournaments.
It was a fourth clash between the two at the US Open:
The 38-year-old Serena reached the finals of four Grand Slams in the last three years but could not win the title. It was the fourth clash at the US Open between the two before Serena won all three consecutive matches. Serena defeated Azarenka in the third round of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 finals. With this victory, Victoria also improved her record.
Osaka in US Open final for the second time:
At the same time, former champion Naomi Osaka of Japan defeated Jennifer Brady 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-3 in the second semi-final. It was Brady’s first Grand Slam semi-final. She had earlier reached the fourth round of the US and Australian Open in 2017.
